Bosco Academy since 2003
Bosco Academy began in September 2003 and its main purpose at the time was to home-school the boys at the primary level for one year. The boys attended the school in the village and most of them were failing. We felt that it was partly due to the large classes, but more so to the effects of the harsh experience in their early years. Many of the boys were malnourished and neglected. This did not only affect their physical growth but also their intellectual development. We felt that creating a safe place for learning and smaller classes would enable to boys to be successful.
After one year, there was such improvement that we decided to maintain the school. Since its beginnings, we are proud to say that all our boys can read and do basic mathematics. Ninety percent of our boys have gone on to High School and are doing very well. We have a few boys who are at the top of their class and have won prizes for academics. We also have a programme for the boys with special needs.
The school places value on individual learning and a mastery of reading, mathematics and language. The boys are also exposed to computers, art, craft, music and Spanish.
Bosco Academy relies solely on donations. We are very grateful for the generosity of the benefactors in Guyana and overseas.
